The Newkfom

Feathers and Fleece Farm is known for the newest up and coming breed for therapy dogs. This breed is the Newfkom. What is so special about the Newfkom you ask? Let us explain...

The Newfkom is a hybrid breed where a purebred Newfoundland is bred to a purebred Komondor. The reason will blow your mind!

The Newfoundland is one of the most well rounded dogs. They are kind, gentle, playful and so much more! Recently businessinsider.com published and article on the best dog breeds. The Newfoundland was in the top 10! "Known as “nature’s babysitter,” Newfoundland Dogs are the absolute sweetest." They went on to say "These gentle giants are highly loyal and easy to train, and are legendary for their docile temper." Who wouldn't want this breed?!?!

But there is a down side. Newfoundlands tend to drool and shed in excess. One shake of the head and you will find yourself drenched in puppy saliva. Not to mention that the Newfoundland not only sheds regularly but will intensely "blow their coat" with the seasons. This will leave you constantly cleaning hair and drool from yourself and your home.

Now let's take a look at the Komondor. The Komondor is part of the working group. They are best described as dignified, brave, and loyal. They are a protector and bond with their flock whether that be people or animals. The Komondor is most well known for their "mop" like hair. However, most people are unaware that if their dreadlocks did not exist their coat would be very poodle like. They are hypoallergenic and non-shedding. The Komondor is also not a drooling breed.

When the Komondor is bred to the Newfoundland it creates a non-shedding, non-drooling, enormous and cuddly best friend! No wonder they are such amazing therapy dogs!

The Newfkom has the gentle, docile, and cuddly personality of the Newfoundland with the loyalty, non-shedding, non-drooling characteristics of the Komondor. Plus these guys are HUGE! With the stocky build of the Newfoundland and the height of the Komondor, your sweet and cuddly best friend weighs in around 150lbs!

Five Reasons Everyone Needs a "Doodle" Mix...

Five Reasons Everyone Needs a "doodle" Mix...

I am sure many of you have heard about the "doodle" hype recently but are not sure why everyone is so excited and in love with these breeds. Here at Feathers and Fleece Farm we are on board too! We raise 4 different sizes of Sheepadoodles (Old English Sheepdog + Poodle) and 2 different sizes of Schnoodle (Schnauzer + Poodle) and we couldn't be more in love with these breeds!

*All three dogs above are from Feathers and Fleece Farm

Here are five reasons everyone should have a doodle mix!

1.) They are so easy!
Because the poodle is bred to another breed this mix will come out hypoallergenic and non- drooling! This means that your dog will not smell like a stinky dog and shed all over the place! No need to keep a lint roller in every room. What a relief! PLUS, their coats are wavy and fluffy. This makes you want to cuddle and hug you furry friend constantly and with their hypoallergenic fur you can cuddle these guys all you want with no allergy consequences! YES!!!!!!
Dexter is cuddling his sister while they watch TV. He is a Sheepadoodle from Feathers and Fleece Farm.

2.) They are healthier than other breeds.
These breeds have something that is referred to as hybrid vigor. This is achieved when unrelated breeds of any animal species are mated. This causes the offspring of the first generation to be healthier, more fertile, and (in animals) more mentally stable than either parent breed. It also increases their life span! Who doesn't want their furry friend to live longer?!?! Want to learn more? Click on this link below to visit our Feathers and Fleece website page on Hybrid Vigor.

Here are Penny and Jenny, two Newfkoms pups of Feathers and Fleece Farm, playing in the grass on a warm spring day.

3.) They are incredibly intelligent!
The Rover Daily Treat recently published the ten smartest breeds and the Poodle came in at a close second place! Their intelligence was based on two qualities: the ability to quickly learn new commands and the obedience to perform them 95% of the time or better! Wow, that's better than most humans! Here at Feathers and Fleece we were interested to see where the Old English Sheepdog and the Schnauzer fell on the list of intelligence. Both were in the top 100! The Old English Sheepdog was number 63 and the Giant Schnauzer was number 28! No wonder our Sheepadoodles and Schnoodles are so easy to train!
Here is Dexter again playing with his youngest sister. He listens so well!

4.) They are so LOVING!
When you get the best of both worlds you get the affection, intelligent, and pleasing characteristics of both breeds. From experience, Feathers and Fleece Farm can say that the Sheepadoodle and the Schnoodle are some of the sweetest, most cuddly and endearing dog breeds we have ever been around. They are great with children and other pets because they love everything and everyone. They are the perfect companions!

You can tell this little guy loves to cuddle his brother and sister!

5.) They are very approachable!
When you combine the poodle's sophisticated and fluffy look with the Old English Sheepdog or the Schnauzer they are absolutely adorable! Here at Feathers and Fleece we believe our greatest marketing is our clients and their pups. You would not believe how many times we have heard "We discovered you  when we met one of your Sheepadoodles at the park!" These breeds do not look mean or scary. Their appearance is sweet and touchable. Feathers and Fleece Sheepadoodles are highly social and eager to meet new people and make new friends.  Everyone wants to pet them! So be prepared for a normal walk to take much longer when you have a doodle at your side!
Just look at this face! He is absolutely adorable!

We hope this has given you some insight as to how amazing these "doodles" are! Join the bandwagon! We can't say enough about our love for them. These dogs are easy, healthy, intelligent, loving, beautiful and so much fun!!!

Komondor pups make everyone smile!

Lilly, one of the Komondors here at Feathers and Fleece Farm, currently has a litter of Komondor puppies. They are 3 weeks and 2 days old today and absolutely ADORABLE!

The Komondor is the only known working dog that will not leave what it is protecting and would gladly give his/her life for those they is protecting.  This has earned the Komondor the highest position among farmers as well as the rich and famous. They are wonderful family dogs as well. It is a breed that will love with all of its being and willing to protect with every ounce of their soul.

Here is a picture of how precious they are! She may currently be small but the she will be HUGE! The Feathers and Fleece Komondor male will be approximately 27"-28" tall weighing in at around 120 lbs while the Feathers and Fleece Komondor Female will be 26"-27" tall and weigh in around 100-110 lbs.

Enjoy this pups small size while you can!

Bougainvillea

August in the Garden

August is the time of year that the gardens begin to wind down. The Hyssop blooms a second time, never as nice or as full as the earlier blooming. Luckily, we have planted nearly 100 summer plox throughout the property. They all burst into bloom in mid July and carry me through to September.
